## Abstract

The inevil ab le proliferation of expert systems und erscores the need for robust, friendly interfaces requiring minimal user training. Th e objective of the XC ALIBUR project is to meet this need by providing natural comprehension and generation in the context of a fo cused mi xed- initiative dialog. The XCALIBUR archi tecture is discussed, including its three central components (parser, generat or and information manage r) , its methods of handling ellipsis and imperfect input, and its relation to the underlying ex pert system.
