*Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence*, pages 57-61.

## Abstract

Three aspects of learning to program are described--the organization and compilation of problem-solving operators, the impact of knowledge representation, and the impact of working memory limitation s. The GRAPES system simulates the organization and compilation of th ese operators. Th e simulation of one pr.oblem -so lving episode is discussed. Al so discussed are the impact of different data notations and the im pac t of working memory load on successful application of LISP functions.
