One central problem in designing a system based on such a theory is specifying the requisite linguistic knowledge in a form that interfaces we ll with a planning system and allows for the encoding of discourse information. The TELEGRAM (TELEological GRAMmar) system described in this paper solves this problem by annotating a unification grammar with assertions about how grammatical choices are used to achieve various goals, and by enabling the planner to augment the functional description of an utterance as it is being unified. The control structures of the planner and the grammar unifi er are then merged in a manner that makes it possible for general planning to be guided by unification of a particular functional description.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/139","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0139.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/139.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/139","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":139,"pages":{"first":595,"last":598},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"Appelt , Douglas E. , Planning Natural Language Utter- ances to Satisfy Multiple Goals, SRI International Arti- fi cial In telligence Center Technical Note No. 2sg, 1g82.","title":"Planning Natural Language Utterances to Satisfy Multiple Goals","authors":"Douglas E Appelt","year":null,"venue":"SRI International Artifi cial In telligence Center Technical Note","doi":null,"url":null,"internal_url":null},{"position":2,"raw":"Cohen, Philip and C.
