The incremental approach uses statistical performance measures from completed solutions to bootstrap the heuristic, which estimates probability of task usefulness. These statistics are clustered in feature space, forming a mediating knowledge structure (region set) between the direct performance measures and the generalized evaluation function. The regions are data-determined, insensitive to noise, and allow management of interacting features through natural piecewise linearity. Early experiment with nonlinearity indicates stability, flexibility and improved task performance.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/115","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0115.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/115.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/115","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Learning and Knowledge Acquisition","track":"Learning and Knowledge Acquisition","number":115,"pages":{"first":469,"last":471},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
