Previous discussions of this issue have all agreed that hypotheses deductively incompatible with the evidence at stage n cannot appear in the sequence beyond n. This paper contends that this conclusion Ts untenable. The use of oversimplified models has led investigators into overlooking epistemological properties of more complex hypotheses which allow more sophisticated methodologies in testing and hypothesis generation. In particular, it is shown that testing already falsified hypotheses may give more experimental information than other, more traditional strategies. This is shown by considering a popular board game, but a realistic example is introduced to demonstrate the general importance and usefulness of the strategy.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/108","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0108.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/108.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/108","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Learning and Knowledge Acquisition","track":"Learning and Knowledge Acquisition","number":108,"pages":{"first":444,"last":445},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
