It is argued that the relationship between these two strategies is analagous to the relationship between technology and science. Hence it is concluded that the development of knowledge-oriented learning systems, which has been largely overlooked by the AI community, is a worthwhile research goal. We then proceed to describe how such a system may 'be constructed by building a machine which continually tries to reduce its own uncertainty regarding the outcome of its actions. An implementation which learns to perform a multiple concept learning task in the presence of noisy data is briefly described.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/105","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/0105.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/105.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/bibtex/105","volume":{"slug":"1983","title":"Proceedings of the Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1983","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1983/","year":1983,"location":"Karlsruhe, West Germany","dates":"","editors":"Alan Bundy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Learning and Knowledge Acquisition","track":"Learning and Knowledge Acquisition","number":105,"pages":{"first":432,"last":434},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
