Strolling Down The Garden Path: Error Prone Tasks in Expert Problem Solving
Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Cognitive Science. Pages 215-216.
Abstract
Problem s which induce performance that has the f alse appearance of success (garden path problems) may be a n inevitable consequence of the need (in both human and computer problem solving system s ) to create abstract knowledge representations in order to make problem solving efficient. An e xample is presented from a domain of physics pr o blem solving tasks in which a hierarchical org ani z ation of lines of reasoning leads to errors o f the garden path type. Several aspects of a poss ible model of the problem solving process in t he se tasks are briefly outlined.
