At the early stages of visual processing, individual units can represent hypotheses about how small local fragments of the visual input should be interpreted, and interactions between unite can encode knowledge about the constraints between local interpretations. Higher up in the visual aystem, the representational issues are more complex. This paper considers the difficulties involved in representing shapes in parallel ayatems, and suggests ways of overcoming them. In doing so, it provides a mechanism for shape perception and visual attention which allova a novel interpretation of the Gestalt slogan that the whole is more than the sum of ita parte.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/217","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/0217.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/217.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/bibtex/217","volume":{"slug":"1981","title":"Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1981","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/","year":1981,"location":"Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada","dates":"24-28 August 1981","editors":"Roger C.
