# Knowledge Sources In Vision

Steven Rubin

*Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence*, pages 1067--1.

## Abstract

This film is a tutor i al introduction to th e problems of computer vision. It b egins with a moti va tion of why knowledge Is important to vision. Knowledge sources that humans tak e for granted are shown to be critically important in pur und e rstanding of what we see . The film then explains the ne ces sary ele ments in a vision system, be it computer visi on or human vision. This is illustrated by showing humans who u se these elements to interpret images . The end of the film gives some detail abC\ut the ARGOS image understand ing s ystem [Rubin, S.M., "Natural Scene Recognition Us ing Locus Search ," CGJP 13, 1980). The following is a brief overvie w of the two main points covered by th e film: the importa nce of knowl edge sources and the basic elements of an image understanding system.
