This paper focusses on five specific data, and explains these data in terms or two hypotheses regarding the relationship of comprehension to generation and the relationship between meaning and syntax. A computer model, CHILD, is described wnich embodies these hypotheses and which manifests the same five data. CHILD's performance suggests that the explanations are plaus~ble.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/20","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/0020.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/20.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/bibtex/20","volume":{"slug":"1981","title":"Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1981","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/","year":1981,"location":"Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada","dates":"24-28 August 1981","editors":"Roger C.
