Four candidate applications missions were considered. (1) An intelligent Earth-sensing information system, (2) an autonomous space exploration system, (3) an automated space manufacturing facility, and (4) a self-replicating, growing lunar factory . The study assessed the various AI and machine technologies which must be developed if such sophisticated missions are to become feasible by century's end.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/154","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/0154.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/154.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/bibtex/154","volume":{"slug":"1981","title":"Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1981","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/","year":1981,"location":"Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada","dates":"24-28 August 1981","editors":"Roger C.
