With the in· creasing demand lor J..D spatial information lor tasks of paui\\le ntwtgation{7, 12j, automBtic survei11Bnce{9/, aerial cartography{I0,13}, and inspection in industrial automBtion, the importance of e.tf'ecti'l'e 1tereo analysis has been made quite dear. A particular challenge i1 to provide reliable and accurate depth data for input to object or terrain modelling systems (such as {5/) . This paper deocribeo an algorithm lor such atereo senoing. It uses an edge-based line-by-line stereo correlation ocheme, and appean to be fast, robust, and parallel implementable. The proce11ing conoists of extracting edge descriptions for a otereo pair · of image•, linking these edges to their nearest neigh bon to obtain the edge connectivity structure, correlating the edge descriptions on the basis of local edge properties, then cooperatively removing th01e edge correopondences determined to be in error - thooe which violate the connectivity otructure of the two images. A further correlation procen, using a technique similar to that used lor the edges, is applied to the image inten1ity value• over intervals defined by the previous correlation . The result of the proce11ing is a full image array disparity map of the .oc:ene viewed.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/118","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/0118.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/118.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/bibtex/118","volume":{"slug":"1981","title":"Proceedings of the Seventh International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1981","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1981/","year":1981,"location":"Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada","dates":"24-28 August 1981","editors":"Roger C.
