This solution Includes the extension of a formal deductive system to Include an observational facility. Using a proof checker for first order logic, FOL [9], we have detailed a proof of the solution of the puzzle, Including proofs for almost all of the necessary associated lemmas [2]. We shall highlight the various representational decisions made In the process of axiomatizing retrograde chess, discussing both the necessity for these particular choices, and their Implications for designers of representations for other domains. This work Is part of the search for epistemologically e.Jftctive formalisms for artificial Intelligence.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/61","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/0061.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/61.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/bibtex/61","volume":{"slug":"1979","title":"Proceedings of the Sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1979","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/","year":1979,"location":"Tokyo, Japan","dates":"August 20-23, 1979","editors":"Bruce G.
