In general, hovtever, trade-offs between image intensity and surface shape emerge which cannot he resolved in a single view. Existing methods for determining shape from a single vie1v embody assumptions about surface curvature. The image Hessian matrix is introduced as a convenient viewer-centered representation of surface curvature. Properties of surface curvature are expressed as properties of the Hessian matrix. For several classes of surfaces, image analysis simplifies. This result has already been established for planar surfaces. Similar simplification is demonstrated for singly curved surfaces and for the subclass of doubly curved surfaces known as qeneral ized cones. These studies help to delineate shape information that can be determined from object boundaries and shape information that can be determined from shading.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/213","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/0213.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/213.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/bibtex/213","volume":{"slug":"1979","title":"Proceedings of the Sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1979","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/","year":1979,"location":"Tokyo, Japan","dates":"August 20-23, 1979","editors":"Bruce G.
