Abstract
This note gives an overview of the Programmer's Apprentice system belna developed at MIT. This system Is conceived as being midway between an aid to improved programming methodotoay and an automatic proarammlna system. A programmer and the apprentice work together throuahout all phases of the development and maintenance of a program. The programmer does tilt! difficult parts of design and implementetion, while the apprentice acts II a Junior partner and critic, keeping track of details and essisting the progremmer wherever possible. A key fe•ture of the apprentice is its ebility to understand the logical structure of a program so thet it cen Interact with the proarammer In a meanlnaful wey.
