Building and Exploiting User Models
Proceedings of the Sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. .
Abstract
This paper de~. cribe~. the i~• ·.11es involved in building and exploiting individual •J ~ ..,,. moclels in order to guide the performance of an inter<lclive ~. y5tem . A r. y•.tem called Grundy, that recommends novels to people, is described and analyzed a!i a forum in which to explore tho!.c issue s. One of the major techniques exploited in Grundy is the use of stereotyper. as a rnPchanism for quickly producing an in1tial approxim<~\ i on to a model of the u,;er . Experiments with the ~.y$IPm show that despite the fact that ster .<.. otypes are inho~rently imperfect. their use does contibute significantly to the sy!>tem's ability to buiid useful models of its users.
