SACON: A Knowledge-Based Consultant for Structural Analysis

Abstract
This paper presents an application of artificial intelligence .!l'ethods to the engln~ering domain of structural analysis. We have developed and partially Implemented an automated consultant called ~ACO~ (Structural Analysis CONsultant), using the EMYCIN system as its framework . SACON advises engmeers _m the use of a large, general-purpose structural analysis program. The structure of the knowledge base, mcludlng the . major concepts used and Inferences drawn by the consultant, Is presented. We ~onclude by mak.ang some observations In light of this application about the EMYCIN system as a representational vehicle.
