To increase their effective capacities, they must develop efficient forma of representation, access, and operation. In this paper we develop several techniques which do not sacrifice expressibility, yet enable programs to (semi-)automatically improve themselves and thus increase their productivity. The basic source of power is the ability to predict the way that the program will be used in the future, and to tailor the program to expedite such uses. Caching, abstraction, and expectation-simplified proces11ing are principal examples of such techniques. We discuss the use of these and other economic principles for modern AI systems. Our analysis leads to some counterintuitive ideas (e.g., favoring redundancy over minimal storage in inheritance hierarchies).","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/119","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/0119.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/119.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/bibtex/119","volume":{"slug":"1979","title":"Proceedings of the Sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1979","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1979/","year":1979,"location":"Tokyo, Japan","dates":"August 20-23, 1979","editors":"Bruce G.
