A languag e definition system coordinates--at the phrase level --informat i on from syntax, semantics . and discourse in the course of the interpretation of an utterance . The system executive uses these c ontextual constraints in assigning priorities to alternative interpretations . combining top - down, bottom - up, and bidirectional strategies as required Experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of context checking are discussed.
