This general focusing mechanism facilitates the experimental evaluation of a variety of specific attentional control policies (such as best-first, bottom-:-up, and top-down search strategies) and allows the modular addition of specialized heuristics for the speech understanding task . Empirical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the focusing prin.ciples, and possible directions for future research are considered.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/7","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/0007.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/7.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/bibtex/7","volume":{"slug":"1977","title":"Proceedings of the Fifth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1977","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/","year":1977,"location":"Cambridge, MA, USA","dates":"","editors":"Raj Reddy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Natural Language","track":"Natural Language","number":7,"pages":{"first":27,"last":34},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[],"license_note":"Copyright International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence."}
