The English sentences of the problem statement are progressively transformed into a semantic network form, a language-free internal model of the objects in the problem and their attributes and relationships, a set of canonical object frames which interpret actual objects as canonical objects (such as a point mass), a geometric model, a set of equationand a picture model. The general notion of a canonical object frame, which abstracts a subset of the properties of an object to form a representation of a canonical object whose interactions with related canonical objects can be formally modelled, is discussed as a method of organizing problem-solving programs.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/65","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/0065.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/65.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/bibtex/65","volume":{"slug":"1977","title":"Proceedings of the Fifth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1977","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1977/","year":1977,"location":"Cambridge, MA, USA","dates":"","editors":"Raj Reddy","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Representation of Knowledge","track":"Representation of Knowledge","number":65,"pages":{"first":286,"last":290},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"Bobrow, D.
