We find that traditional theorem proving methods are inadequate to explain the directness of these solutions, and that the well kno~n algorithms for polynomials etc. are inadequate to explain the wide variety of equations solved. Our analysis reveals a system of high-level descriptions, strategies and goals, which can be used to guide the search through an explosively large search space. A few of these strategies will be investigated in detail. It is hoped that this analysis will eventually be incorporated into a computer program that solves equations.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1975/4","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1975/0004.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1975/4.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1975/bibtex/4","volume":{"slug":"1975","title":"Proceedings of the Fourth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1975","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1975/","year":1975,"location":"Tbilisi, Georgia, USSR","dates":"","editors":"Patrick Winston and Carl Hewitt","isbn":"","publisher":"International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence","doi_prefix":""},"section":"Mathematical and Theoretical Aspects of A.I","track":"Mathematical and Theoretical Aspects of A.I","number":4,"pages":{"first":22,"last":27},"keywords":[],"videos":[],"references":[{"position":1,"raw":"Bundy, A.
