Abstract

"Factual knowledge" us"d by natural language precessing syst"as can loe cor,vcn ier.tly repn:sented in tt.e !or111 of se111antic networks. Compared to a "linear" rep.-esentation such as that of the Predicate Calculus however, seman~ic networks present Sfecial problems with res~ect to the use of logical cor.nectives, quan~ifiers, descriptior.s, and certain other constructions. syste111atic solutions to tbese problems will be proposed, in the form of extensions ~o a more or less conventional network ~otation. Predicate Calculus translations of network fropositions w: ll frequently be given for comparison, to illustrate the close kinship of the two forms of representa~ion.
