The usual problem-solving approach to handling a task is not suitable when each decision may turn out in several ways, and many decisions are needed to complete the task. An alternative approach, which is based on maximizing the estimated utility resulting from each decision, is illustrated. The example describes the plans, utility functions and decision procedures of a simulated insectlike robot called PERCY. In spite of its limited ability to perceive and store information about the environment, PERCY can achieve satisfactory performance on its task.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1973/52","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1973/0052.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1973/52.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1973/bibtex/52","volume":{"slug":"1973","title":"Proceedings of the Third International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1973","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1973/","year":1973,"location":"Stanford, California, USA","dates":"20-23 August 1973","editors":"Nils J.
