A Language Based Problem-Solver
Proceedings of the Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Pages 463-472.
Abstract
Language learning and language use play central roles in problem-solving. It is argued here that a rigidly built-in language will not serve the needs of problem-solving. To use language as significantly as in hwnan problem- solving it is necessary to design language pro- cessors specially suited to the task, The pro- cessor should use language as a medium for describing situations so that their similarities are recognized. Recognition of such similarity would enable the system to respond to new situ- ations with forms of response known to be ap- propriate in similar, familiar situations. The design and implementation of a problem-solving system based on this principle are described. This system exhibits some cap- ability to learn and use a language, and to solve problems.
