Rewriting rules, which play the part of a recognizer, are formulated in a hierarchical structure. Rule 1 normalizes the length of string and extracts properties, rule 2 transforms the deformed string in a context dependent way and rule 3 determines the category. A procedure for producing rules from given sample patterns based on the similarity between the s y mbols and a procedure for modifying the ru l es when input patterns are added are described .. Experimental results of the recognition of Japanese spoken digits to illustrate the method are exhibited.","doi":null,"url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1971/28","pdf":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1971/0028.pdf","markdown":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1971/28.md","bibtex":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1971/bibtex/28","volume":{"slug":"1971","title":"Proceedings of the Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","short_title":"IJCAI 1971","url":"https://ijcai.org/proceedings/1971/","year":1971,"location":"London, UK","dates":"","editors":"D.C.
